banana peels do not serve only to make compost or comedy program: a new research shows that heavy metal contaminants can extract water from rivers.

metals like lead and copper enter waterways through a variety of sources including agricultural runoff and industrial waste. Once there, the heavy metals can contaminate soil and pose serious health risks to humans and other species. It is known that lead affects the brain and nervous system.

Traditionally, engineers specializing in water quality have used silica, aluminum oxide, cellulose and water to remove heavy metals, but these strategies are expensive and involve potentially toxic side effects themselves. Function as pumps due to the presence of acids as those found in carboxylic and phenolic groups, attracting metal ions.

Bananas, by On the other hand, seem to be a safe alternative. Banana peels also have better performance than its competition, says Gustavo Castro, a researcher at the Institute of Biosciences of Botucatu, Brazil, and coauthor of a new study on this use.

For the study, Castro and his crew and ground dried banana peels and combined with flasks of water with known metal concentrations. They also developed water filters with the shells and made by running water through them.

In both scenarios, "the metal was removed from the water and was mixed in shells," said Castro, adding that the extraction capacity of the shells Banana exceeded that of other materials used to remove heavy metals.
home do not

Castro advised to use banana peels for purifying water in homes. For starters, the concentration of heavy metals in tap water is usually negligible. Also, although putting banana skins in contact with water is likely to draw some metals, it is unlikely that the average person to quantify success.

According to Castro, the findings of their study will likely be used in industrial environments.

The new study is published in Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, a journal of the American Chemical Society.

I remember as a child and so many brothers who were sometimes not enough food. I ate the banana (the banana), then ate the shell and thereby alleviate hunger. Now my brothers laugh when we remember these things but a hungry child can eat any cosa.Responder.2 enjoyed this review

In fact, bananas are radioactive enough to, in large quantities, to blow the radiation sensors used in ports and customs in the United States to detect the illegal smuggling of nuclear material.
addition, they have been used to establish a standard radiation dose is called "dose equivalent to a banana" or BED for their English acronyms (Banana Equivalent Dose), which determines how much radiation a person has been exposed in relation to radiation had absorbed from the consumption of this fruit.

A common banana 150 grams is about 600 mg of potassium (396 mg per 100 g), which contains about 0.070 mg of radioactive potassium, which is equivalent to 18.5 becquerels or 520 picocuries (pCi). The average radiological profile of the common banana is therefore of 3250 picocuries per kilo. The equivalent dose of 365 banana (one a day for one year) is 3.6 millirems a day.

potatoes, beans, nuts, sunflower seeds and avocado are also moderately food radioactive in nature. In fact, the most radioactive food in nature is known from Brazil are nuts.

The difference between radiation emitted by bananas and other food and a nuclear reactor is in the type (alpha, gamma or beta), the amount and how it is absorbed by the users enjoyed this review cuerpo.Responder.1

According to the scientic potassium is a radioactive element such as gold, according to them that small amount of radioactivity is not harmful to the contrary it helps our body has to fight or prevent diseases such as cancer, that's why I recommend eating lots of fruit. if you eat bananas regularly, help you have not experience cramps, especially the elderly, and apples help with digestion as well as figs and users enjoyed this review datiles.Responder.2

It has fungicidal properties eg, by rubbing a wart on the skin acts as an acid, obliterating it. It is also a magnificent fur polish. Now this property of absorbing heavy metals and serve as a filter is one more property of this material to help us preserve the environment, congratulations to the scientists that took into account this friend + alimentariaResponder.3 security to users enjoyed this comment
