El Yunque: Potential World Wonder

The Rain Forest 'El Yunque' is a cool, mountainous, sub tropical rainforest. The eastern side of the Luquillo Mountains, which has the El Yunque rainforest in the upper elevations, gets most of the rain.

The true sub tropical rainforest takes up very little space in Puerto Rico, in a half moon on the weather side of the mountains of El Yunque. It is totally within the Caribbean National Forest. This life zone is characterized by an annual total of 3400 mm of rain. Its main features are the Sierra Palms and a superabundance of epiphytes.

Caribbean National Forest known as El Yunque, is located in the Sierra de Luquillo at 40 kms., East southeast of San Juan. Comprises approximately 28 acres and is the only forest of Puerto Rico which is administered by the Forest Service U.S. Department of Agriculture. It is also the only tropical forest in the National Forest System.
In 1903 he created some laws that were beneficial to the forest, the federal government declared this forest, the Luquillo Forest Forest and in 1907 the Insular Government accepts these laws.

El Yunque soils are shallow, a brown-gray color on a red clay clear permeable. This soil is classified as clay and containing more than 50% silica and alumina in combination. Due to its cold climate and consistency are difficult to work. Elevations range from 100 to 1.075 meters above sea level.

! Good news!

El Yunque went to the second phase of the competition of "The New 7 Wonders of The World." A panel of experts selected from between 1.600 our natural wonders. We are competing under Category E - forests, national parks and nature reserves.
